School Facilities

MODEL SCHOOLS IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT/ STUDY (MSIPS)

(Consultant - Phillip Rekdale)

The following is an outline of my proposal to identify, study, attempt to address, and document many of the practical implementation issues that will confront school staff and SMU consultants affecting change in the field.

I have chosen SMU 6 in Kebayoran Baru as the location for this study because:

  • The school is centrally located allowing ease of access (and inclusion into other programs) for visitors attending to other duties in Jakarta (efficient).
  • The school environment and buildings (grounds) are representative of many regular SMUs in Java.
  • The teachers and students are enthusiastic.
  • The students do not appear to have a problem with extended hours in the school (students in some areas/ schools have serious problems with inter-school harassment).
  • The condition of the existing facilities meet the general standard for schools in Java.
  • The school is an active Sanggar therefore transference of development can be economically sustained through incorporation into regular Sanggar programs during visitations by member schools.

Process of the study

1. Preliminary visit (October 6, 1998)
2. Formal visit/ meeting with the headteacher – seeking authorisation (scheduled October 12, 1998)
3. Develop a formal proposal for implementation of the facilities development - in conjunction with the headteacher.
4. Obtain formal approval and support from Dikmenum.
5. Schedule meetings with:
  • Administrative staff (presentation, and identification of relevant current school planning issues)
  • All Subject Coordinators (presentation, and coordination of objectives)
  • Library, Language, and Science Teachers (presentation, and identification of specific needs).
  • Treasurer – school finance (establishing sustainable objectives)
  • School Parents/ Teachers Group (study time issues, community links, and community education).
  • All staff (Community/ industry links, community education)
6. Develop a strategic plan for implementation (school specific).
7. Commence Implementation.
8. Provide basic in-house training and make recommendations for further training.
9. Report the results of the "practical study" to Dikmenum and the other Model Schools Development consultants.
10. Follow-up – feedback from teachers and students (verbal, written, survey?).
